Cask Beer is Here!
If you live in Seattle or will be in town the weekend of the 28th you cannot miss the 15th annual Cask Fest presented by the Washington Brewers Guild. This is another one of my favorite festivals where brewers flock to the Seattle Center with amazing one-of a-kind and limited release beers. All the beers feature have spent some time cask conditioning in either firkins, wine, or spirits barrels. Don’t be surprised to see some beers topping out around 14%! Instead of tokens, the Guild provides “punch cards”, giving attendees the chance to try up to 25 beers! Hope to see some of you there!

Fact of the Month
Cask conditioned ale or “real ale” as it is known in Britain, is beer that has rested in a barrel or firkin (non-pressurized keg) before serving. This process allows the beer to “mellow out” and can subtly or drastically change the flavor.

New Beers
Counterbalance Brewing Co.– Pogo Duck ISA
Fremont Brewing –  Gose (Cucumber Lime version available)
Georgetown Brewing – DH ESB, 5 Point 5 IPA
Hilliard's - Oak aged Saison, Tequila aged Saison

Outlander Brewing – Raspberry Berlinerweisse
Pyramid Brewing Co. –  S.M.A.S.H. IPA

Spring is in the Air!

I am sure that most of you have heard by now that Elysian Brewing was recently acquired by Anheuser-Busch, a move that sent shock waves through out the local beer scene. Though acquisition is nothing new to A-B, it has been many years since they have made a move up here in Seattle. Beer fans are worried and scared of the unknown. There is speculation that A-B will use Elysian to try and force out smaller breweries from the market. The uncertainty is palpable. I for one, hope that A-B just tucks their Elysian card into their enormous portfolio of brands and lets them keep doing their thing. One good thing for all of you out of towners- you will soon be able to find Elysian Beer in all 50 states

Fact of the Month
Washington is the second most-productive hop growing region in the world and over 75% of Hops grown in the US come from Washington State.

Fact of the Month
The modern fermenters the most breweries use these days are called CCV’s (closed conical vessels) or CCT’s Cylindroconical Tanks. Traditionally brewers used open fermentation tanks called “coolships” to cool the wort and inoculate it with yeast.

Holiday Cheers for Beers!
Hey guys, for this months’ Drew Brews News we are going to do some arts and crafts and show you how to make an awesome “12 Beers of Christmas” Box. You can gift this to your favorite beer lover or keep it for yourself and have a holly jolly Christmas!

Step 1: Cut a hole in the box. Just kidding, the first step should be buying twelve 22oz bottles of beer (or more)

Step 2: Cut the flaps off the top of the box.

Step 3: Wrap the box with festive wrapping paper
(No photo, you can figure it out!)

Step 4: Fill box with beer

Step 5: Place bows or numbers on bottles

Now you have a festive holiday beer box! Enjoy a new beer everyday leading up to Christmas

Note: For "7 Beer of Kwanza" or “8 beers of Hanukkah” put less beer in the box (duh)

I also wanted to tell you about a cool company in Portland, OR called Growlerwerks. These guys have designed a pressurized growler called the uKeg (photo below) with a built-in sight glass and tap! If you are worried about your beer going flat this is a darn good way to prevent it! (or you could just drink all of your beer, it's only 4 pints!) I ran into these guys when I was with a tour at Hales and snapped a quick pick.
